Beverly's Bookshelf

Welcome to my Bookshelf! On these pages, I share some of my favorites from my collection of almost 3,000 books -- from non-fiction books about sexuality, to fun, engaging fiction -- and everything in between! Accompanying each book will be a kind of experiential review, a book blog of sorts. Dawn Adams said, "Show me the books he loves, and I shall know the man far better than through mortal friends." I hope that in browsing my Bookshelf, you will come to know me better, as well.

I love reading. My mother was a reading teacher, and taught me to read when I was only three years old. I learned then that books were treasures, and within their pages I could travel to amazing places. When I was a little older, I used to climb the tree in the back yard, sitting high up in the branches, hidden by the leaves, reading books for hours.

I get lost in books. As a child, and even today, I become so focused, so lost in my book, I am often utterly unaware of my surroundings. People call my name, and I can't hear them -- they are in another, more mundane world. If you'd like to, remind me to tell you about how this "super-focus" almost got me locked in a shopping mall for the night!

Books, like knowledge, like love, are meant to be shared. I am delighted to share some of my favorites with you. This section of my site is new, so please check back. I'm starting with a good "overview" selection, including many books that have had a profound influence on my life and thinking. I will be adding more favorites, plus new selections all the time -- as fast as I can read them! If you'd like to discuss any of the books you see here, or if you have a recommendation, please send me an email! Enjoy!

Reading a truly good book is like meeting a wonderful new friend.

Going back and re-reading a favorite is spending time with a treasured old companion -- and the mental equivalent of "comfort food."

Reading feeds the mind and spirit.
